Brookfield, Missouri - “A Great Place to Land!”

October, 2008
"Chamber Chatter"

Hello again from the Brookfield Chamber of Commerce and thanks for reading our column. I'm going to say "Happy Birthday to Me" (for next week) because I love my birthday and am always thrilled to see I made it to another one. I have to say that when I was 30, 40 even 50, I thought turning 60 was old, old, old. What was I thinking???

Oh my gosh, Brookfield was busy over Oktoberfest weekend. At the park, we had over 25 booths, with everything from pot holders to purses…candles to coat racks…jelly to jewelry…and apples to antiques. The Drury University Architecture students had a very intriguing display at the Gazebo showing changes that Brookfield could possibly undertake…like adding a scenic walking trail, and lofts upstairs in our business district. The students were also guest judges of the pie and chili contests.

Speaking of contests, the winners of the Chili Contest were:

  • 1st Place... Jim B. Lane
  • 2nd Place...Teresa Rogers
  • 3rd Place....Fran Graff
  • 4th Place....Bethany Myers

Winners of the Pumpkin Pie Contest were:

  • 1st Place...Lauraine Garten
  • 2nd Place...Polly Taylor

Winners of the Apple Pie Contest were:

  • 1st Place...Meredith Rulon
  • 2nd Place...Erin Barton
  • 3rd Place...Jeanette Cox

(I just want you to all notice that again I didn't win the chili contest and I even knew the judges…UGH).

Chamber lunch was held at "A Step Back in Time" at Noon Today. Our speakers were Tina Smith (of Tina Smith Graphics) & Brian Cryderman (of Walsworth & Tina Smith Graphics). Tina & Bryan talked to us about the advantages of having a website for business and how one is built. Next month at the November Chamber lunch on the 11th, our speaker will be from Green Hills Recyclers in Laclede. Another great topic and another great meal.

Only two more Saturdays to go at Farmers Market…Take this time to stock up on home baked goods. They freeze really well and we have some great bakers at the Market. Oh, and don’t forget…October booth space is free!!!

For all of you that didn't get your 32nd Great Pershing Balloon Derby t-shirt this year…they are still available at NCM Graphics in a variety of sizes and best yet…they are at a very reduced price. What a great Christmas gift!!!

The MCB (Missouri Community Betterment) Conference will be held on Monday Oct. 20th at Jeff City. Over the last 6 years Brookfield has always placed either in the youth or community category. This year one of our projects submitted was the Brookfield Farmers Market. There is still time to join us on Monday…for info call Marcia @ 258-7278.

Many more things going on the next couple months!!! Like Halloween at the YMCA… Saturday, October 25 - 6-8 pm. For ages 1 to11 with a Haunted House, Games, Crafts, Prizes, and your Pictures taken in costume…...Parks & Rec is hosting their Annual Halloween Fun Night and Costume Contest Tue., Oct. 28th starting at 5:30 pm at the Burlington Football Field. A bike will be given away and special goody bags for all who attend the costume contest. After the costume contest the kids will parade up Main Street to the Twin Parks where the candy hunt and games begin!!! Sumner Goose Festival runs from October 24th-26th. The big parade is at a new time this year so go to www.goosefestival.org for more information… Always a fun time for adults and kids alike.

November 21st & 22nd kicks off the Brookfield shopping season with our Holiday Open House. That Friday stop by the Chamber Office for a cookie and some cocoa….The Annual Brookfield Holiday Parade will be held on Friday, December 5th at 5PM to coincide with the Tree Lighting ceremony hosted by Parks & Recreation. This year's theme is "150 Years of Christmas Cheer" with prize money awarded to the top 3 floats. Santa will join us at the Gazebo after the lighting ceremony to hear all those Christmas wishes and hand out candy to the kids. Line up is at 4:30 at the Trinity Methodist Church and everyone is invited to enter a float or just be in the parade. This year the marching bands will be able to compete for prize money and a trophy.

The 2nd Annual Holiday Open House hosted by Lisa Hofstetter, Barb Hayes & Melinda Allen will be held at the Elementary Cafeteria & Gym on December 6th from 10AM-3PM. All crafters, bakers, groups & organizations are welcome. Call Barb @ 258-5415 (nites) or 258-2682 (Days). Offering information about our area, welcoming new businesses and families, hosting special events to attract visitors and enhance shopping. The Chamber is supported by members of this community that care about the growth and quality of life we offer in Brookfield. Not just businesses, but Churches, Organizations & Individuals. They don’t ask “what are you doing for me”…they only ask, “what can we do together to help our community.” If you would like to be a part of the Chamber of Commerce Team or if you should have a question on anything that’s going on, please feel free to call the chamber office @ 660-258-7255 or e-mail chamber@brookfieldmochamber.com.
