Brookfield, Missouri - “A Great Place to Land!”

October, 2007
"Chamber Chatter"

Hello again from the Brookfield Chamber of Commerce and thanks for reading our column. I am an advocate of “Shopping Local” and am going to “hop on my soapbox” in hopes that a few of you, each time I write this column, will grasp the idea and run with it.

We all love our town and have all had a time we called “our favorite”…. Times continue to change and nothing remains the same no matter how hard we try. We can complain about what we don’t have anymore and talk about how great some other town is…Or…we can start supporting our own…our families that have risked it all to have a business in a small town. If you think it’s easy to make a business work, just think about all those that didn’t survive. What does every business need that we all can give??? They need us to shop their stores. Every time you think about leaving town to buy something…stop and ask yourself…have I tried to find it locally?????

Even though there were a ton of things going on over Oktoberfest weekend…we all had a great time. Holly & Hollister even stopped by and entertained us. One of my favorites was “the Monster Mash”!!! There were about 22 booths, everything from flags to fancy purses…pumpkins to duck calls…jelly to antiques. The Kids Apple pie contest had Tanner Wallace, Gale Bueche & Cain Falconer as the 1st 2nd & 3rd winners. Adult Apple Pie winners were Jeanette Cox (she was last years winner too) & Erin Barton in 1st & 2nd. Pumpkin pie winner Sara Newton won 1st place & McLarney Manor residents John & Alice came in 2nd. The Chili Contest winners were Teresa Rogers in 1st Place, Cheryl Knifong in 2nd Place & Joanne Asher in 3rd Place.

We all got soaked last weekend at “Farmers Market” but 3 booths set up even with the cold rain. One of our diehard shoppers, Doc Montgomery, made sure he bought something from each of the vendors. That’s loyalty!!! Only 2 more Saturdays to go….Now is a good time to stock up on home baked goods. They all freeze really well and we have 3 or 4 great bakers at the Market. Oh, and don’t forget…booth space is free!!!

The Chamber office is going to host new Welcome Wagon bags. If you have a great idea for them or something to add please stop by or give me a call. It’s been quite a few years since there was a full fledged Welcome Wagon in Brookfield and in lieu of going to their homes to drop off the bag of goodies…a postcard will be sent inviting them to stop by the office and pick up their bag. Naomi Sparks was the last Welcome Wagon lady we had and before that I remember it being Carol Smith. It’s a nice inviting touch to those that have just moved to our community.
