Brookfield, Missouri - “A Great Place to Land!”

November, 2008
"Chamber Chatter"

Hello & Happy Thanksgiving from the Brookfield Chamber of Commerce. I hope your Thanksgiving meal will be as good as mine. The women in my family are all really good cooks, so it’s always a holiday to look forward to…oh, and it’s really nice to have the family get together, too. My whole family won't be there this year because my step dad, Bill Walker, passed away last week. We can share fun stories over turkey though and remember the good times!!!

My biggest chatter is that the Chamber offices are moving down to the South side of Main Street... into the old Littrell gas station across from Quinn Lumber & next door to KZBK Radio. Larry Graves has bought our building at 300 North Main Street and will be opening his new Real Estate business, Mid West Land Brokers, LLC. I don't think the Chamber has ever been located on the South Side before. I will have a little further to walk to work but that’s not a bad thing!!! Our office space will be quite a bit smaller so you won't see me junking up the place so much…oh my gosh…it would be a miracle to see me in a neat & tidy office. Even I won't believe that till I see it!!!

Chamber lunch was held at "A Step Back in Time" at noon today. Our speaker, Allen Malavolti, owner of Green Hills Recyclers in Laclede, shocked us with the phenomenal figures of how many thousands of tons of solid waste have been saved from the landfill and recycled right here in Linn County. Allen also covered what items he can accept at Laclede. You are always welcome to join us at Chamber lunch. It's the 3rd Wednesday of each month, with a delicious meal and interesting speaker.

This Friday, stop by the Chamber office (I haven't moved yet) for coffee & cookies. I am embarrassed to say that I missed the Open House last weekend when many of our merchants kicked off their holiday shopping season.

The Annual Brookfield Holiday Parade will be held on Friday, December 5th, at 5 p.m. to coincide with the Tree Lighting ceremony hosted by Parks & Recreation. This year's theme is "150 Years of Christmas Cheer" with prize money awarded to the top 3 floats, and 1st 2nd & 3rd place trophies for the marching bands. Santa will join us at the Gazebo after the lighting ceremony to hear all those Christmas wishes and hand out candy to the kids. Line-up is at 4:30 at the Trinity Methodist Church and everyone is invited to enter a float or just be in the parade.

The 2nd Annual Holiday Open House will be held at the Elementary Cafeteria & Gym on December 6th from 10AM-3PM. All crafters, bakers, groups & organizations are welcome. Call 660-258-5415 (Nights) or 258-2682 (Days). The Beta Sigma Phi will also be hosting a “Santa House” at the Catholic School this same day starting at 10am. There will be face painting, candy cane walk, cookie decorating and much more fun for the kiddies.

The YMCA Benefit Auction & Chili Dinner is Friday December 12, 2008, at the Brookfield Elks Lodge. Mark your calendars for this annual event. Advanced tickets are $5.00; at the door $6.00. Children under 12 are $3.00. Dinner/Silent Auction 5:00/7:30 pm. Oral Auction starts at 8:00 pm. Lots of great Christmas presents, decorations, baskets, and gift certificates. All merchandise is donated by area merchants and individuals. Open to the public!!!

Last week, we had a Ribbon Cutting at King Printing, 422 E. Brooks. Sam Correll, new owner of King Printing has merged his sign & banner from Park Sign Co. with the T-shirt business and custom label business that already existed at King Printing. His new salesgirl, Amy Lewis, will be out and around introducing their new catalog while Kelly Collins still handles all the t-shirt printing. Phone # 258-7451. Stop by…there's a lot of great gift ideas at their new store. Within the next 2 weeks, Chamber member Randall Stonger's business, Safari Salon & Laser will be expanding their beauty shop into the 100 N. Main St. building on the corner. Between the 2 stores they will offer "non-invasive laser cosmetic procedures" for Skin Rejuvenation, Sun/Age Spots, Skin Tightening, Wrinkles, Stretch Marks, Scars, Rosacea, Permanent Hair Removal, Freckles, and Acne. Permanent Make-up, (eye-liner, lip-liner, etc)…Tanning Booths, Massage therapy, hair stylists, their own line of mineral make-up, ladies accessories, candles, purses, and much more. Calvin & Rhonda Uptain celebrated the 1st anniversary of their Main Street business, Bookstore of Brookfield with punch and cookies last Friday. Congratulations and many more.

Time to talk about keeping your money local…We all know what hard times are out there these days and it's time to stick together. Your local merchants need your business. Brookfield Bucks can be the answer to all your gift giving. They don’t have an expiration date and virtually every business in Brookfield will take them…..use them just like a gift certificate that works for the entire town!!! They can be bought at the Chamber office with no additional expense to the buyer, shopper or the merchant. Last year at Christmas over $14,000 worth of Brookfield Bucks were sold.

I want to end my Chatter on a sad note…We have lost another great citizen, business owner and Chamber member Linnell Shiflett, owner of Southside Equipment, passed last week. I had worked with Linnell during my old KMZU days and always knew him to be a kind honest businessman. You will be missed, but we'll think of you often.

Gosh…I'd better quit now. If you should have a question on anything that’s going on, please feel free to call the chamber office @ 660-258-7255 or e-mail chamber@brookfieldmochamber.com. We have the "Sesquicentennial" schedule on the website now with much more to come!!! The Chamber is here to assist in bettering our community in any way we can by offering information about our area, welcoming new businesses and families, hosting special events to attract visitors and enhance shopping. Till next month…Give Thanks for what we do have, “Shop Local”…Recycle…and keep reading “CHAMBER CHATTER”!!!
