Happy month of “MAY” from the Brookfield Chamber of Commerce…Please get your crafter forms turned in as soon as possible…also don’t forget the free talent show on Saturday June 6th at the Gazebo from 2-4pm. Two big chances to show off your talents in Brookfield this Summer!!! The Recycling Trailer will be back on June 10th-17th. Just a note…they do NOT accept “Furniture” or Glass. I am going to do my best to be short and to the point today…I tend to ramble a wee bit!!! :o)

This piece of news is urgent so it goes 1st…Our neighbor in Marceline “Cupp Chevrolet” has received the letter for possible closure in October 2010. Please help show your support by sending a letter to the dealership by May 22nd. They need 10,000 letters to present their case to GM. Cupp Chevrolet has been in business since 1927 providing a 4 county area with good honest service. Please help!!! Letters can also be e-mailed to

Chamber Lunch was held today at “A Step Back in Time”. Our speaker Marcia Cunningham from BAGP updated us on the new 3-plex Movie Theatre under construction at the Brookfield Shopping Center, the new Highway 36 Tourism Group that reaches from St Joe to Hannibal and she gave us a quick update on the Sesquicentennial. This was our last Chamber Lunch till September. Please join us in the Fall. Thanks to Janice Merritt for our great meals!!!

A Ribbon Cutting will be held for new Chamber Member “Linn County Computer Repair” this Thursday at 10 a.m. Owner Joe Duey comes to us from Marceline and is open and ready for business at 305 N. Main inside the Main Street Mini Mall at the old Shelter Insurance office.

We also welcome new Chamber Member “Inn at Clover Hill” owned by Kathy & Fred Carpenter of Sumner. They are also constructing a Hall to host Wedding Receptions, Family Reunions, etc. A Ribbon Cutting will be held upon completion. You may reach them at 660-856-3648 or visit the website at

Brookfield Farmers Market is off to a roaring start. Each Saturday from 8 a.m.-Noon, we invite you to join us at Tormey Park. New shoppers and vendors are always welcome…just call the chamber office if you need more info!!!

Brookfield Summer Fun Days is only 3 weeks away…June 4,5,6 & 7. The Carnival will be here Thursday (arm band night), Friday, & Saturday (arm band afternoon). Thursday Night is also the Queen Contest with Jennifer Ludington as the co-coordinator. You can call her @ 348-8556. Farrel Hahn & his Variety Band will play Friday night at the Gazebo and the car cruise will also be that night. Of course Saturday is the SFD’s Parade, Sidewalk Sales, YMCA’s 5 & 10 K run, Car Show, Baby Show, Petting Zoo, Arts & Crafts Festival, Lawn Mower Races, Little Toot Toot Train, and Talent Show. We have a new Motorcycle Show this year hosted by “Widow’s Sons Masonic Riding Association”. Something else that’s new...“Remedy Drive” a young Christian Rock Band, playing at the Park Baptist Church Fellowship Hall Saturday evening at 7 p.m. We wrap up the weekend with the Fishing Contest on Sunday. Always a fun time at Summer Fun Days…Please join us!!!

While City Hall is getting a new facelift…they ask that you use the North Entrance (Police Station) for City Hall business!!! They are sorry for the inconvenience.

Linn County Republican Women will be meeting Thursday May 21, 2009 at Smith's Business Center, Brookfield. Social hour at 6:30 and business meeting starts at 7 p.m.. Speaker will be from the State Capital discussing the recently ended session. Questions call 660-244-3153.

Summer College Classes start the week of May 26th at the Area Career Center. Still time to register. Become a Certified Medication Technician…9 Mondays starting June 1st from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.. 60 hours of class plus clinical. Class taught by Linda Neely. Julie Sherman’s “Professional Communications Workshop” will be held from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. on June 8,9,10 & 11. Register by June 1st. Brookfield Public Library Events begin June 1st with a Summer reading program for age groups birth-7 and 8-12 and teens. Their Annual Book Sale is June 5th between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. And the Teen Journaling Workshop is June 17th @ 2 p.m.

June 4th Life Care will be taking their residents to the Marceline Community Center to see “Elvis” and enjoy lunch in town. They will also be participating in the Summer Fun Days activities that weekend. June 13th Life Care will be hosting Ryan Arnold @ 2 p.m. Everyone is invited for an afternoon of Music & Fellowship. June 20th they will host their Fathers Day Bar-B-Q @ 1 p.m.

The LCHS/Museum needs furniture and other items for the Sesquicentennial museum in the old 4-Seasons Building. Call Barbara Rusk 258-5103, Shirley Hagan 258-2456, or Sharon Howell 258-7138. Tracy Lawrence Concert tickets (July 25th) are $20 for general admission and are available at all Brookfield Banks, Brookfield Chamber of Commerce, Cupp Wallace CPA, DeVoy Baker Ins. and Smith Motor. There is a PayPal link set up on the Chamber Website to purchase tickets and sesquicentennial souvenirs.

Some Sesquicentennial items of interest…We are still looking for fund raising groups to work the food booth in Twin Parks during the Sesquicentennial. You will share 50% of the profits for your labor!!! Call Fran at the Chamber to sign up or for more info. “Linn County’s Got Talent” Show held July 21st on Good Neighbor Day is looking for talented individuals or groups to participate. 1st Prize is $100, 2nd $50, 3rd $25 & 4th $15.Contact Marcia Cunningham at 258-7278 to sign up. Entry fee $10. Also “Taste of Brookfield” wants you to showcase your culinary talents on July 21st between 4-7 p.m. by the Twin Parks Gazebo. Call Shawn Moore at 734-8039 or Bill Dorsey at 258-2542. Let’s not forget “Movie Night in the Park” (Tormey Park) @ 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 21st sponsored by Citizens Bank. Also Dollar Dog will be here for the parade that day. The Sesquicentennial Queen Contest is looking for Queen Candidates. Girls between the ages of 18 and 21 are encouraged to participate. (Must be a graduate of Brookfield High School). The 33rd “Great Pershing Balloon Derby” will be held September 3rd-7th this year. The date for Oktoberfest in the Park has been changed to October 10th to coincide with Homecoming and the 2nd Annual Brookfield Bar-B-Q Contest.

Our flowerpots look beautiful…the banners are hung…the high school volunteers did a paint up/ clean up around town yesterday and the city is out in force painting and fixing and mowing and cleaning. Thanks to you all…now let’s follow their lead and clean up around our homes and businesses. We have a lot of company coming this Summer and we want to look our best!!!!!
