Brookfield, Missouri - “A Great Place to Land!”

JUNE 2010 (Click here to see our member ribbon cuttings!)
"Chamber Chatter"

Happy "Fathers Day" from the Brookfield Chamber of Commerce... The new July 2010 Green Hills phone books will arrive any day now, and we already have cases of AT&T phone books and the Chariton Valley books. We also have Brookfield City Maps & the Missouri Vacation Guide. Please come get all you need. Moving myself along!!!

The Recycling Trailer will be back to Wal-Mart on July 7-14. Keep up the good work!!!

Large appliance pick up is Friday, June 18. You can buy your sticker at City Hall. 660-258-3377

The "Living Well U-9 Show Me Soccer Team" will have a dunking booth and bake sale at the park Thursday, Friday & Saturday while the carnival is here. Half of all the dunking booth proceeds will go to the Chris Roberts benefit.

Speaking of the Carnival - I’ve known Darcy Ann of Jones & Co. Carnival since the old KMZU days. They run a nice clean carnival, and we have lots more rides this year. The carnival will open Thursday, June 17, with armbands from 5-9PM each evening Thursday, Friday & Saturday and also 1-4PM on Saturday afternoon. Armbands are $17. Opening time is 4pm on Thursday & Friday, and noon on Saturday. Come join us for a fun weekend!!!

Right up front, I want to dispel the rumor that this was the last Summer Fun Days... you will see it again in 2011, June 16-19. Yes, the carnival that is here now will also be here on that date along with the car show, queen contest, crafters, baby show and all the other events we have had over the years. I hate rumors; they are rarely right. So, If you hear one... just call me... maybe I can nip it in the bud!!! On a better SFD's note, what a great turnout we had, and the Car Show was sooo happy on Main Street. Maybe next year some more of the merchants will take advantage of the traffic that swarmed the streets.

It's no rumor that the old Taco/Tico building is about to open with a new business “City Sign Design” owned by Michael Munsterman & Ron Bunse. They will be doing all kinds of signs, printing, copies, banners, posters, and anything else in between. They really want to encourage the other businesses in town to consider giving their signage a facelift. Michael quotes "I think one of the best ways we can promote the businesses in town is to not just manufacture quality signs but also to create some branding. It is a strategy that Ron and I have applied to our own business that has really lent itself to the overall growth of our company." Michael & Ron are also the owners of “The Living Well Company” located in the old Dura Plant. They plan to open next week with the Grand Opening & Ribbon Cutting in July. The phone # is 660-258-2300. If you all remember, last year they went in and gave the poor old dilapidated building a new life. It was definitely an eyesore when you came into Brookfield. What a great showing it makes now!!!

The Tillman Museum (at 303 Livingston) is open and will be open Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 10am to 3pm for everyone to come and see all the new accomplishments. They are still looking for items to be donated or loaned to the museum like military uniforms for any war from Linn County residents, school class pictures from any school in Linn County, old musical instruments, advertisements from businesses all around Linn County, or anything else people would like to see in the museum. They now have a phone at the museum and the number is 660-258-7160 to call during open hours or they can still call the bookstore @ 660-258-7800. I think all the new flowers and the new sign have really jazzed it up.

They are slowly growing their selection and will soon be extending to more Missouri wine. These can be purchased at the shop or added to a bouquet of flowers. My final words are on the proposed changes to Swan Lake by the US Fish & Wildlife Service. I have been approached by citizens who will be affected by these changes whether it is their livelihood or their recreation. I am reading the summary of the "Draft Comprehensive Conservation Plan" that was just put out this month (June 2010). Free copies are available at the Brookfield Library. What bothers me is they started the planning in 2006, but we the public only have a one-month review period. In order for our comments to be considered for the preparation of the "Final CCP", they must receive our comments by July 5, 2010. Our neighbors in Sumner are dependent on the goose & duck hunters to keep their town alive. Brookfield has a large tourism base during any & all of the hunting seasons as do all the surrounding towns. Whichever way you feel about this issue, we owe it to ourselves to quickly become informed on what is about to happen. Please take the time to read the booklet on the Swan Lake National Wildlife Refuge Comprehensive Conservation Plan website. There are several options for downloading the booklet along the right side of the page (with graphics, without graphics, etc.). I have the addresses of our political officials which may also be contacted. Just please be personally informed so there are no regrets later.

Till next month… Give thanks for what we do have... Travel Safely... “Shop Local”... Recycle... Give to those less fortunate... and thanks for reading “CHAMBER CHATTER”!!!
