Brookfield, Missouri - “A Great Place to Land!”

June 2009 (Click here to see our member ribbon cuttings!)
"Chamber Chatter"

Happy “Fathers Day” from the Brookfield Chamber of Commerce… The new July 2009 Green Hills Phone Books will arrive any day now and we already have cases of ATT Brookfield/Chillicothe Phone Books and the Chariton Valley Books. Please come get all you need. I also have a few new Sesquicentennial Schedule pamphlets with more on the way. The Recycling Trailer filled up so fast this week that on Thursday they came to empty it. The trailer will return next month to the Wal-Mart parking lot on July 15th-22nd. Have you seen the new front of City Hall??? Oh my gosh… it is beautiful. I haven’t asked anyone, but I think it has that New Mexico flair. Watch me be sooo wrong!!! Also the City guys have been scraping and scrubbing the rails around the underpass. Soon they will be painted. They have inspired me… I’m getting ready to plant Lily’s next to our new Chamber Building. Bring in a little color!! On to more chatter.

Summer Fun Days (despite the rainy morning), turned out great. The Carnival had extra rides for us this year and did “arm bands” everyday and twice on Saturday. The Talent Show was a hoot (I won’t elaborate), Farrell Hahn and his band performed another great concert and we had a new motorcycle show along with a great car show. The booths were full, the Queen contest went off perfectly… gosh, what more could you ask. Okay… it was a wet baby show, but everyone huddled under the Gazebo and it worked out fine.

It was “Customer Appreciation Day” at Farmers Market this past Saturday. Holly & Hollister sang and I kept the burned hot dogs coming. We’re getting a lot more fresh produce and still have a large selection of baked goods, dry mixes, jellies and crafts. Please continue to support the vendors that come to Tormey Park on Saturday morning during Farmers Market. They really appreciate you!!

We had a Ribbon Cutting at the new Sesquicentennial Office last week. They are located at 300 N. Main Street (my old office) and the phone # is 258-7446. They have all the souvenirs for sale along with the new t-shirts…already got mine!!! You can pick up a schedule and a sesquicentennial post card for free while you’re there. The design on the Post Card was done by local artist Wendy O’Toole.

Our old KFC building is being made ready for a new restaurant named “Twister’s Fire Grill”. The owners of the property, Lev Investments, Inc. located in Los Angeles have joined partnership with family friend Ygal Levy, also from L.A. to open this unique fast food restaurant…with a twist!!! They hope to open in time for the Sesquicentennial and are taking applications at the restaurant now for experienced kitchen and fast food help. A baker is also needed. I’ll keep you updated.

“Let’s Talk Business” is a new discussion group for any and all businesses in Linn County and brainchild of Rhonda Uptain, owner of the Bookstore of Brookfield. The discussion is “how can we Help, Promote & Support each other”. The first meeting will be this Thursday, June 18th @ 6:30 pm at the Bookstore of Brookfield. Come share your ideas on how we can make our businesses more successful. Hope to see you there and refreshments will be served.

The Brookfield Bowl in support of the Business meeting that is happening on June 18th, 2009 hosted by the Brookfield Bookstore, has created a couple different websites to get peoples feedback on how to help Brookfield grow. The first one is www.growbrookfield.com – It is up & running and has a forums section for everyone who would like to voice their opinion & do so anonymously. The second site is www.brookfieldspecials.com - This one is still under construction. I have a personal note…I just looked through the grow Brookfield website and I hope that people will actually make positive constructive comments in the future and not use this as a Brookfield complaint site. I’ll leave it at that.

The Brookfield Bowl is also looking for volunteer youth coaches for the fall bowling season. Call Brian @ 258-7476 or e-mail him at bmenini@hotmail.com.

Linn County Federated Republican Women will be meeting this coming Thursday June 18, 2009. The social hour will start at 6:30 and the meeting at 7 PM. The meeting will be held at Smith's Auction and Business Center in Brookfield. The program will be a report of the state convention recently held in Branson.

The Linn County 4-H/FFA fair is coming up fast. July 11th-18th. You can print off a complete schedule of events at http://www.extension.missouri.edu/linn.

Anyone who has information on the history of the Citizens Bank & Trust house or the people who lived there please send or drop it by the bank. Citizens is also having "Banking on the Veranda" Thursday, July 23rd and would like to do a presentation of the house history that day. They hope there is more information about the house they can include.

The LCHS/Museum needs furniture and other items for the Sesquicentennial museum. They would like for someone to loan them cooking utensils, dishes, etc and furniture that would go in a 1950's, 1960's kitchen. They are planning to have a 1900's parlor, so besides furniture, they could use old lamps, plant stands, etc. The last room they hope to set up would be a late 1800's bedroom with a bed, dresser, chest of drawers and some small items you would find in a bedroom from that age. They don't want any of the actual items now, just want to know what you will loan the temporary museum. Please call Shirley Hagan @ 258-2456, Barbara Rusk @ 258-5103, or Sharon Howell @ 258-7138.

Tracy Lawrence Concert tickets (July 25th) are $20 for general admission and are available at all Brookfield Banks, Brookfield Chamber of Commerce, Cupp Wallace CPA, DeVoy Baker Ins. and Smith Motor. There is a PayPal link set up on the Chamber Website to purchase tickets and sesquicentennial souvenirs. The website is being updated as I speak. The information is current and T-shirts and sesquicentennial book orders will also be available thru Pay Pal here.

Some Sesquicentennial items of interest…We are still looking for fund raising groups to work the food booth in Twin Parks during the Sesquicentennial. You will share 50% of the profits for your labor!!! Groups already signed up to work are: City Relay for Life, South Eagle UMC, Brookfield Fire Dept, Brookfield Rotary, UMB Relay for Life, Park Baptist Church Youth Group, Brookfield High School Cheerleaders, & Brookfield Youth Wrestling Parents. We have 8 Groups signed up and 4 more slots available. Another opportunity to help the Sesquicentennial Committee raise funds for this tremendous event will be on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday & Saturday (July 20th-26th) @ Burlington Field. We will be running the food concessions for all the evening events at the field and volunteers (no sharing of the profits here) are needed to help. Call Fran at the Chamber to sign up.

The 33rd “Great Pershing Balloon Derby” is Labor Day weekend, September 3rd-7th. Everything is moving along very well. The T-shirt design and colors are really great this year, most of the Pilots have sent in their reservations, the price of propane is way down and the order for good weather has already been sent!!! It’s all Good!!!

Oktoberfest in the Park has been changed to October 10th to coincide with the Brookfield Homecoming and the 2nd Annual Brookfield Bar-B-Q Contest. We will still have free booths along with the pie & chili contests. The event is growing and having it on Homecoming gives our visitors something special to do.

If you have any questions on anything in the Chamber Chatter, just call the chamber office @ 258-7255 or e-mail chamber@shighway.com. We are here to assist you and our community in any way we can.

Thanks for reading “CHAMBER CHATTER”!!!
