Brookfield, Missouri - “A Great Place to Land!”

December, 2008
"Chamber Chatter"

A very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you all from the Brookfield Chamber of Commerce. We have a new supply of local ATT phone books and the 2009 Missouri Vacation Planner has just arrived!!! I have to complement how beautiful the East Twin Park looks this year. Karen Grant and her crew did a great job getting ready for Santa. In fact…all of Main Street looks really festive…I especially loved the decorated streetlights on top of the underpass. The white lights on the Main Street trees were again donated by Wal-Mart, and all the banners and big ornaments up and down Main Street were hung by the Street Department…Thank you so much. And thanks to all of you who braved the cold for the Christmas Parade. And thanks Larry McCurry for riding Santa in style!!!

Our office is now moved into the 101 South Main building, next door to KZBK Radio and across the street from Quinn Lumber. It used to be Littrell’s Gas Station. I spent all of last week running from one end of town to the other with my computer at one office and phone in the other. Thank goodness that’s over. The atmosphere is totally different here at the big intersection, but I love it already. Like I said last month…it’s a smaller space…but that should keep me organized!!! Before I forget…we have DeGraw Theatre engraved bricks still available.

Yesterday we hosted a breakfast for all the City Workers, Fire Department, Police Department, etc. A little payback for the things they do to assist us all year long. The Chamber Board members even cooked the meal…and no one got sick…yea!!!

Chamber lunch was held at "A Step Back in Time" at noon today. Our speaker was Neva Olson, Manager of Hope Haven Industries in Chillicothe. They are a very old recycling organization/sheltered workshop which has moved its efforts into the 21st century. Hope Haven will now accept any old or obsolete computers, monitors, printers, fax machines, vcr's, dvd's, satellite receivers, toasters, hairdryers, etc. and recycle them down to the last screw (for no charge). They are not being shipped overseas to pollute another country as some so called electronic recyclers are doing. Hope Haven has also offered to bring us a trailer to collect our normal recycling, leave it for a week at a time, and come back and pick it up...again for free!!! This is a wonderful opportunity for us to help make our community a little greener!!! We will be looking for a host location to accommodate the trailer for one week a month. You can look over their website at www.hopehavenindustries.org. Remember, you are always welcome to join us at Chamber lunch. It's the 3rd Wednesday of each month, with a delicious meal and interesting speaker.

The YMCA Auction Fundraiser was a huge success last Friday evening. They raised over $9000 at the auction, and no one died from my chili. The Mission of the YMCA is to put Christian principles into practice through programs that build a healthy spirit, mind and body for all!!! Your donations and purchases at the fundraiser made that possible for yet another year. By the way…Congratulations on the YMCA’s 5th Anniversary. The “Y” is a positive asset to our community for young and old. Thanks for all your support.

On December 18, the Brookfield Area Growth Partnership held the FINAL community presentation made by the Drury University Students of Architecture. Their recommendations and visioning ideas for Main Street and other focus areas are fresh and quite exciting. This was held at the Elks Club Ballroom with social hour starting at 5:30 PM & presentation @ 6:00 PM. Appetizers were served!!!

Here are some more events happening in the near future:

Citizens Bank & Trust is having Customer Appreciation Days this Thursday & Friday (Dec. 18 & 19) with cookies and wassail and a drawing. Everyone is invited!!!

The Post Office is having their “Christmas Open House” on Tuesday the 23rd all day, with more great refreshments

Brookfield Bowl will be hosting a Las Vegas theme New Years Eve Party (Dec. 31st) and on Saturday, January 31st they are having an Adult/Child Tournament…Also Mondays are “Kids Day” at the Brookfield Bowl from 3:45-5:15. For more info go to www.brookfieldbowl.com.

The Sesquicentennial Committee will hold a Casino Night/Auction Fundraiser on Saturday, January 24th at the Elk’s Club with a $500 Cash Drawing plus numerous other prizes donated by local merchants. The new Sesquicentennial Souvenir items will also be on sale that night. For more info, contact Larry Graves @ 660-258-2400 or Josh Fay @ 258-5588. This event is open to EVERYONE!!! Also on a sesquicentennial note…Rogene Smith adds that the book committee is still waiting to hear from several organizations and she is still looking for old houses in Brookfield to document their history.

Chariton Valley Telephone thanks everyone for their donations to the “Coats for Kids” Drive. Over 137 coats were collected and will be distributed to area schools and churches.

Welcome to new Chamber Member, Lewis Co. LLC Storage Buildings and Chamber Friend, Mary Louise Johnson. We’ll have a Ribbon Cutting soon (when the weather gets better) at the new storage buildings owned by Amy and Matt Lewis and located just South of Citizens Bank. On another Chamber note…Safari Salon 2 is now open at their new 100 North Main location and they will be adding “teeth whitening” to their list of many cosmetic procedures. Randall told me that one visit could whiten your teeth 6 or more shades. That’s Bright!!! Another newsworthy addition…“Junk & Disorderly” now has heat (that helps shopping, huh???) and this weekend Mr & Mrs Santa will be at their store.

We welcome Pam’s Furnishings into the old Main Stop Building…they are also an AT&T Cell Dealer. You will remember that Pams has been out on the highway for years…glad to have you in town!!! Another new opening is “Half Sauced BBQ” located at the Brookfield Plaza. We have needed a BBQ restaurant for a long long time. I’ll have more information in my next column.

Please remember during this season of giving that shopping local keeps our merchants here for us to shop another day. Our merchants need our business. Don’t know what to buy????? Brookfield Bucks can be the answer to all your gift giving. They don’t have an expiration date and virtually every business in Brookfield will take them…..use them just like a gift certificate that works for the entire town!!! They can be purchased at the Chamber office with no additional expense to the buyer, shopper or the merchant. This year over $16,000 worth of Brookfield Bucks were sold. Thank you to all that support our community!!!

If you have any question on anything that’s going on, please feel free to call the chamber office @ 660-258-7255 or e-mail chamber@brookfieldmochamber.com. The "Sesquicentennial" schedule is on the website with more detailed info to come!!! The Chamber is here to assist in bettering our community in any way we can by offering information about our area, welcoming new businesses and families, hosting special events to attract visitors and enhance shopping. Till next month…Give Thanks for what we do have…Travel Safely…“Shop Local”…Recycle…Give to those less fortunate and Thanks for reading “CHAMBER CHATTER”!!!
