Brookfield, Missouri - “A Great Place to Land!”

August, 2008
"Chamber Chatter"

Looking back, I see that this is my second year Anniversary writing "Chamber Chatter" for the Linn County Leader. Just because I am sort of a nostalgic type of person, I'm going to kick off with my very first paragraph from August, 2006.

"Hi, I’m Fran Graff, Brookfield’s Chamber of Commerce Director. We run a friendly one person office at 300 N. Main Street here in Brookfield that is open everyday, M-F, from about 10am-4pm. We have Tourism Brochures, Vacation Planners, Phone Books, info on upcoming events, all sorts of stuff…The Chamber is run by a board of nine individuals that meet the 2nd Tuesday of each month. In our new monthly column “CHAMBER CHATTER,” I will try and pass on information of things coming up…or, depending on the timing, possibly things that have recently passed. We hope you enjoy getting to know your Chamber a little better."

A little more nostalgia…two years ago I wrote…"This year the Derby receives the highest recognition of being “The longest continuously running BFA sanction race in the nation”…That’s the whole United States!!! Not bad for little ole Brookfield, huh???" While pondering my words I realized…we will ALWAYS have this recognition!!! Unless we quit (and we won't ever do that), we will ALWAYS hold this title. Gosh…sometimes it’s the little things that really impress me!!! On a sad note, we lost a long time sponsor & Green Hills Ballooning volunteer last week. Bruce Smith (new resident in Rothville & sponsor of & Ben's Chickens) passed away at the young age of 59. He will be missed.

Each year the Chamber has a drawing for one lucky paid up member to get the entire Balloon Sponsorship for free!!! The drawing will be held this Friday. Just another perk for belonging to the Chamber!!!

Next Thursday kicks off the 32nd Great Pershing Balloon Derby. The Chamber office receives calls every day from people wanting info on the Balloon Derby. What a unique event we host. The Queen Contest is Thursday night (August 28th) at 6pm, in the Twin Park Gazebo…Jennifer & Kadie tell me we are also including Little Mr., Jr. Prince, & Prince to the Contest!!! There is even optional Talent for the Jr.& Sr. Queen portion. Friday night, balloons will glow on South Main Street from about 8-9 pm. Saturday all day, there are Sidewalk Sales Downtown, and Arts and Crafts booths set up in Twin Parks with a Baby Show at 10am and a really big Balloonists Parade at Noon…At 1pm the Gazebo entertainment will be "Charlie Sings Country"…Saturday Night is a free dance open to everyone at the Elks Club with Mid-Life Crisis playing great old rock n' roll from 9pm-1am…The Balloon Flights are Sat/Sun & Mon at 7:15 am and Sat & Sun afternoon at 6:00 pm. After each afternoon flight there will be an evening glow. All flights are at the launch field on FF. Weekend passes can be purchased at NCM Graphics or the Chamber office. You can get a Craft Form or print off a schedule of events on this web site.

I spent last weekend at the State Fair with my daughter Smokey handing out samples of her "Fruity Peppers" jalapeno sauces in the Agri Missouri Market. Oh my gosh…the first day alone we went thru 1500 samples. It was quite an experience and a wonderful marketing opportunity that couldn't be bought with $$$.

Pershing Days will be held in Laclede Sept. 11-14th with the 2nd Annual Milford's Station Car Show happening on Sat. the 13th. Registration 7am-noon.

The MCB judges will visit us sometime between September 15th-18th, with the MCB Conference being held in Jeff City October 19th & 20th.

September 17th will be the first Chamber Lunch of the season…12 Noon at "A Step Back in Time." Lunch will be $8 and an RSVP will be greatly appreciated.

Oktoberfest will be held on Saturday, October 4th, at the East Twin Park. Again the Chamber will host a Chili contest, an apple pie contest for kids and an apple & pumpkin pie contest for adults. We will have a “FREE” Arts, Crafts, Antique, Flea Market day at the park and you can get signed up by calling the Chamber Office. Farmers Market will be located at Oktoberfest on that Saturday. The whole day is always a whole lot of family fun so don't forget to mark it on your calendar.

Also on October 4th Pershing Hospital will host their "Open House" and Ribbon Cutting!!

We welcome the First Christian Church as our newest Chamber Member. They were established in 1886 and located at 1416 North Main. You may reach the church by calling 258-2253 or check out their website.

Last but certainly not least…I want to thank the City's Building & Grounds crew for going up and down Main Street clearing out all the overgrown weeds. What a difference it made. Thanks guys!!! With all the out of town visitors coming to Brookfield this Labor Day Weekend, I hope you too will help make Brookfield shine by cleaning up your own neighborhood.

If you have a question on anything that’s going on, please feel free to call the chamber office @ 660-258-7255 or e-mail The Chamber is here to assist in bettering our community in any way we can by offering information about our area, welcoming new businesses and families, hosting special events to attract visitors and enhance shopping. Till next month….Shop Local…Recycle & Don’t Litter!!! Thanks for reading “CHAMBER CHATTER”!!!
